HAGERSTOWN, MD — The Cat 1 Open classes in selected AMBC races are designed to help the MASS Elite racers that normally race in the Pro/Elite class at MASS races. The Cat 1 Open classes will give both Qualifications for MTB Nationals and MASS Pro/Elite Series Points. There is no “Open” class at Nationals, but the top 10 in the Cat 1 Open classes, in any of the AMBC races that run them separately, will qualify to race at Nationals in their respective age group.
If a combined Pro/Elite class is used in a race, only those Cat 1 racers who place in the top 10 of the combined group will get qualifications. By running a separate Cat 1 Open class, all 10 of the top Cat 1 Open racers will get qualifications. This should relieve the pressure for the MASS Elite racers to “race down” into their age-group class in order to qualify, thereby opening more qualification opportunities for the age-group racers. Racers need only to make the Qualification level in one of the AMBC races.
Simultaneously, when run separately, placings in the Cat 1 Open classes will be merged with the Pro placings by use of total race times to award racers MASS Series points for the MASS Pro/Elite class, as if they had been run together.
